Throughout Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, Sherlock Holmes (the hero) and Dr. Watson (the narrator) share a special kind of relationship. The stories show the duo's moments of everyday intimacy as well as the flashes of excitement that occur during their work fighting unusual crimes. Dr. Watson shares every detail of their adventures with us, describing Holmes's many talents in glowing prose. Clearly these escapades with such a shining beacon of manliness are more exciting than his everyday life with his wife, who is referenced only briefly, and with inconsistencies between the various stories. I have collected some of the most telling excerpts here. What makes them interesting is usually Watson's choice of words when describing his companion. Other times, I have simply taken a passage out of context. You may draw your own conclusions.
